Practicing Mindfulness with author Whitney Stewart for an Anti-Tech Day

Local author, Whitney Stewart teaches mindfulness to college students and has written a picture book on meditation. She visited during Teen TECH Week to teach the students how to put away the technology for a bit to ease stress. The highlight of the exercises was when she talked everyone through eating chocolate bits in a mindful way.
If you want some technology help to get you started on mindfulness, try one of these sites:

 Marshmallow Engineering

The task was to become an engineer and/or architect and use marshmallows and toothpicks and skewers to build a multi-level tower that would stand upright on its own. There were pictures and books for inspiration, but the students preferred to just go at it and build as they saw fit. Some of their designs worked and others fell flat, literally.

Picture Yourself on a Book Cover

The kids had a blast finding books with faces, hands, and even animals on the cover that would work in a picture with their face or hands. You can see the results of the fun below.

Game of Phones

This was a game that we created just for Teen TECH Week 15. You can find the directions on how to play the game on the librarian's blog here. The students were very enthusiastic about the game because there was a winner for each round, and there were some great prizes.

Popcorn and a Movie

It is tradition during Teen TECH Week to spend one day watching the animated short films that were nominated for an Academy Award. This year we watched the 2015 winning entry by Disney called, Feast and two of the other nominated films. The high school students loved The Dam Keeper the best. It was the longest at 18 minutes and had a very dark theme.

Daily Research Riddles

Every day the students receive one of these riddles in an email. They are expected to conduct online research to find the correct answer. There are forms in the library that they must use to document their answers to be eligible for the daily prize, and the grand prize given at the end of the week.
