Students Battle with Books in a Mock BOB:

Picture
When School Library Journal asked if PFTSTA would participate in their 6th annual BOB (battle of the kids books) by hosting a Mock BOB, the students were thrilled to be included. Since the BOB coincided with TTW, we decided to combine the two activities. The BOB started with the sixteen selected books which the Battle Commander at SLJ posted on a set of brackets. Students in Bookmarked and BRiMS were asked to select one of the 16 books to read. Each student had to defend their book with (s)words in front of an audience. The audience used an electronic device to record their selection. The first six battles were held during TTW with the rest being fought throughout the month of March. You can read lots more about each battle here on the librarian's blog: Round1 battle 1 and 2, Round 1 battle 3 and 4, Round 1 battle 5 and 6.

Now Playing @ the library:

On movie day, students were treated to two 2014 Oscar winning shorts. Mr. Hublot which won for best short animated feature, and Helium which won for best short live action feature. Though Helium was a tearjerker, the students were transfixed.

Friendship Bracelets as Makerspace Activity:

Every year during TTW, we plan some sort of creative activity. This year, the students used an online video to teach themselves how to make a four strand yarn bracelet here. All supplies were provided including a myriad of colored craft yarn and beads. Some students used the video as their inspiration, but others chose to branch out on their own. This was the most popular activity of the week with students coming in to the library who only enter with a scheduled class.

Research Riddles 4 TTW 2014:

This activity is  part of our yearly TTW activities. Students receive a riddle in an email and must use electronic resources to find the answer. They fill out a form in the library and receive a small prize. At the end of the week, a middle school student and a high school student will be selected as grand prize winners and get a $15 iTunes or Amazon gift card. Past google-a-day questions are used as inspiration for the riddles, and this year's questions can be found below.
